How a Mowing Calculator Can Help You Choose the Right Mower

Picking the right lawn mower can be a challenge. Once you start considering lawnmower speed, deck size and the acreage you need to mow, it's easy to become overwhelmed by the options. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a handy tool to help you decide?

That's where our Mowing Calculator comes in. Whether you're mowing a tiny patch of grass or an entire golf course, our calculator will let you know how much time it will take – and help you choose the right lawn mower for the job.

Choosing the Right Lawn Mower

To determine how much time it will take to mow your lawn, simply enter the width of your lawn mower deck (in inches), your mowing speed (in miles per hour) and the size of your lawn (in acres). The lawn mowing calculator will tell you how much time it will take to mow your lawn, which will give you a better idea of what size lawn mower is right for the job.

Choosing the Ideal Deck Size

As you know, lawn mowers come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, so deck size is an important consideration. As a general rule, the ideal yard size to deck size ratio works out as follows:

  • 1/2 - 1 Acre: A 42" deck will do the job nicely.
  • 1 - 2 Acres: A 42" to 46" deck would be ideal.
  • 2 - 3 Acres: A 46 to 54" deck will help get the job done quicker.

Using This Calculator

Based on the mower width, mower speed and yard area you enter, the lawn mowing calculator will tell you how many hours and minutes it will take to mow your yard, as well as your average pace. For example, if you use a mower with a 42-inch deck, mowing a 1-acre yard at 5 miles per hour, the calculator determines that it will take you 31 minutes to mow your lawn, with an average pace of 1.9 acres per hour.

One thing to keep in mind is that the mowing calculator calculates your time and pace based on a perfectly flat lawn, with no landscaping or obstacles to mow around. Based on the configuration of your landscape, it may take slightly longer to mow. Granted, using a zero-turn mower that mows quickly and makes tight turns will greatly reduce your mowing time.
